Weller Soldering Gun - __main

    The Sled Mangled the Coupling

  • I grabbed some linear data books and a couple of each kind of IC. I looked through my haul and found some switched capacitor ICs -- MF10. The divide by n drove the stepper pulse in. I used the three decades, since I had no idea of the gear ratio I would encounter. We had scanty information that a digital pulse train would drive a stepper motor and then a gear reduction to a screw drive. The leader had a background in optical media -- we obtained half a million in venture capital and proceeded to ramp up. I bought some lab benches and set up an electronics lab. I took the VCO output and drove a three-decade divide by n. I mounted BCD switches on the front panel. I used one of these as a low pass filter whose output went to an absolute value circuit. I guess the apps engineers were out to lunch, too, as I was greeted by a friendly receptionist who told me, “The data books are back there.

Weller soldering gun doesn't get hot unless touching metal?

I was trying to do some soldering at work the other day, and I have never used a soldering gun, but I have lots of experience with the pencil type soldering irons. I found a very nice brand new Weller gun and decided to give it a try. I plugged it in and pulled the trigger, the light came on, but after holding it for a minute, the tip hadn't heated up at all. When I touched the tip to a nearby metal plate, the gun felt like it was humming and heated up quickly. Is this normal behavior, or is something wrong with the gun?

No, it is ok, mine does this....

Whats a good soldering gun to have?

please suggest one over 40 watts. I'd be doing small electronics and main power (wall outlet)

Soldering guns are not suited for electronics. They're good with electrical but not electronics. Their heat is too high for sensitive electronic components, and any circuit board you put one to will likely lift the traces off the board. I have three irons. One for fine electronic work (Radio Shack), one for larger electronic work (again Radio Shack) and I have a Weller soldering gun for those times when I need massive amounts of heat and where a torch would damage other things around the solder joint. Best of luck with your project. '')

I have a couple of Weller irons with iron-coated tips and thermal-magnetic temperature control, which have worked for years and give no trouble. For electronics, that is, not plumbing or metalwork. They have exchangeable tips for fine/not-so-fine work. Without temperature control, either you don't have enough power for soldering more massive connections, or the thing overheats with no load, burns out the tip, and has a good chance of damaging components or lifting traces.

This review is from: Apex Tool Group D550PK 120-volt 260/200-watt Professional Soldering Gun Kit (Tools & Home Improvement) I wanted a gun that would deliver the heat quickly. This gun has two ranges and the high range is what I was looking for. It delivers what it advertises. It holds the heat to the solders melting point. There was no overheating or burnt material. It also has two lamps by the trigger to illuminate the job in weak light. I am very satisfied with this soldering gun, it functions well and has a real nice balance when working. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 29, 2008

This is a smart purchase for the electronics hobbyist or home projects solderer but it's probably not up to standards for the professionals out there. The kit tips are well shaped and the gun heats up very quickly. Be aware that for those looking to start out, this product is not a substitute for a pen style soldering iron as it's a bit too big for easy handling on detailed projects like board work. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 5, 2010

This is the real deal when it comes to soldering! I'm not talking about small jobs either, this baby gets HOT and QUICK. While the pen type soldering irons are great for smaller applications, this gun blows away the competition when it comes to heavy duty jobs. If you have a large amount of solder to apply to big wires, this is the gun for you.And with the name Weller on the box, you can be guaranteed a great product! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , March 6, 2014

I bought this one to replace the old one I had owned for about 8 years. It finally quit working after being dropped a couple of times. It heats quickly and will readily solder up to 8ga wire. I have also used the cutting tip to weld plastic and cut nylon cord. It is important to keep the tip clamp screws tight. If it doesn't heat up properly (less than 10 sec) then the clamp screws probably need tightening. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 16, 2008

0 5/5 Atlanta Network Guy (Atlanta, GA United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Weller WEL8200PK 120-Volt 140/100 Watts Universal Soldering Gun Kit (Tools & Home Improvement) Soldering irons are great for electronics component and circuit board assembly, but when the occasion comes when solder has to be applied to big wiring (or removed from it), the volume of metal sucks away the heat faster than an ordinary iron can apply it. On those occasions, only a solder gun or a gas torch applys enough joules of energy for the job, and a solder gun does a much neater job without endangering nearby possesions. Weller is the industry leader for these devices. Changing tips is a bit of a hassel, and somebody at Weller needs to revisit that engineering, but its overall a very nice tool for what it does. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , February 6, 2002

    D650PK - The Best!

I've used soldering tools for over 50 years, since my first Weller gun in 1961, and I've tried them all. Some otherwise pretty good guns can't take being dropped (even once). A lot of tips just don't last. Some of the newer guns are awkward and uncomfortable to hold. Some of the soldering tips waste a most of their heat in the legs, instead of at the tip. I have a few old guns in need of tips, which are unavailable, or the substitute tips don't work right. But now - this gun is so good, I wish I'd bought one decades ago! It fits my hand perfectly. It's compact and well balanced. Materials and workmanship are first class - and even though I haven't dropped it yet, I can tell by the feel the housing is tough enough to take some knocks. Best of all - the tip gets hot FAST, and there is plenty of power for big jobs. After a day of soldering on #8AWG and #6AWG terminal lugs (40 or so), the tip still looks like new.Weller has been making this gun for a long time, and the tips are... 5/5 Roger C. Is this the best there is? Time for a redesign...

Ive owned several of these, since they are suppose to be "the best" on the market. The first one I received, one of the screws holding the tip on were in crooked and stripped out so it never tightened on right. In my opinion this tool is sub par. With my current tool, it does heat quickly, but for some reason every 10 minutes of use I have to re-tighten the screws due to loosening, or perhaps carbon buildup. This is quite inconvenient and after you unscrew it a dozen times the alloy body strips out and needs to be re-tapped with larger threads.I like my new 'home tapped' threads better anyways because with the larger screws, it hold tighter, and loosens up less often. The high setting is also a pain to use since you have to hold the trigger in half way to activate it. This is uncomfortable and cramps my fingers very quickly. Its also counter-intuitive having the high setting at half pressed in and low at fully pressed.I'm not all squawk... 3/5 Ewan C - See all my reviews This review is from: Weller 8200 Universal Soldering Gun (Tools & Home Improvement) Ive owned several of these, since they are suppose to be "the best" on the market. The standard model that does the job

0 4/5 tkeithlu - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Weller 8200 Universal Soldering Gun (Tools & Home Improvement) This is the standard been-around-for-40-years Weller general purpose soldering gun. It has the power to solder larger diameter (say, 14 gauge) wires to switches and the like, and has two heat settings, determined by how far in you pull the trigger. It also has a see-what-you-are-soldering light just above the trigger. Avoid the 7200 model if this is the sort of work you want to do - the 7200 really does not put out enough heat quickly enough for efficient work. I use one 8200 with a rope burning knife rather than a soldering tip to cut and seal small diameter nylon rope on my boat. The 7200 will not do that. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , June 1, 2014
