Tail Wheel Repair

After many attempts with soldering irons I finally just used a plumbers torch to attach the brass tube to the bracket. I first protected the plane with tin foil, as best I could, generously tinned the parts and then gave them a quick blast. I then used JB weld to add another layer around the parts.

What does "blanked-off" mean in the following sentence?

Particular attention should be given to the cleaning of pipelines, joints, bearings, blanked-off ends, mixing equipments etc.

A blanked-off pipe end is simply a cap fitted over the open end of a water or gas supply. Where the pipe is redundant and going nowhere. this seals it. Nowadays caps can be hi-tech push-on plastic or a brass pressure-fitting. Before such labour saving was possible, plumbers would solder a copper cap in place with a gas blow-torch. And even further back it was common practice to hammer the copper pipe flat and solder in a straight line along the squeezed end. This was and is the cheapest option, but it always leaked sooner or later.

it's teh same as dead ends
bluebellbkk | Sep 26, 2013
For example, if a pipe isn't needed any more, it's often easier just to block its end/s rather than try to remove the whole thing. But they still need to be cleaned.

"blanked-off" means sealed with a solid cap
Kiron Kang | Sep 26, 2013
A cap made of plastic or metal is used to seal a pipe that is not used, or needed. Example blanking off the spare hot water outlet as new washing machine only requires a cold water pipe, and has no need for a hot water feed.

How should I melt this metal?

http://www.amazon.com/Lead-Free-Pewter-C asting-Bismuth/dp/B001QV3J46/ref=pd_sbs_ indust_3 I want to melt it so i can cast it. How do you suggest I melt it to a point where I can cast a coin out of it?

As it says (much too far down the page) " The melting temperature is around 466 - 590 F." You can melt it on the kitchen stove or with a torch of almost any kind - I would recommend getting a small cast iron fry pan with a side handle or a melting ladle sold for melting plumbers lead - which is harder to find. Be very careful handling it because it if splashes it can do skin and clothing damage as well as floor, counter, etc.

Great at first. Won't light after 8 months.

I thought I'd invested a little extra money for convenience and durability. Wrong. While the TS4000 I purchased from Amazon worked flawlessly for 8-10 hours of use, it won't start at all after having sat idle for 8 months. When I start it 'manually' via an aim-n-flame, it has a broad fan-shaped flame that doesn't heat property.I guess the instruction manual should have said to test the TS4000 before each job, as it is not a dependable tool. Now I'm stuck with no water, an upset pregnant wife, and a run to Lowes to pick up another 'disposable' torch.Shame on Bernzomatic.UPDATE: The broad fan-like flame was caused by some "micro-webs" in the neck of the torch. While they didn't look like they could possibly block the airflow, I guess they were sufficient to disrupt the swirling mixture of air/propane. I blew them out with some compressed air and the TS40000 is acting like new. I now store the "torch" in a large zip-top freezer bag to keep out the... 4/5 Stephen Smith (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews, June 11, 2011

0 2/5 Upton O'Goode "Upton" (WA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Bernzomatic TS4000 Trigger Start Torch (Tools & Home Improvement) Like other reviewers, I think the Bernz-o-Matic TS-4000 Trigger Start Torch Head is a good piece of plumbing equipment. My only addition to their comments is that I have been through three of these in about 5 years. They get to the point where the piezoelectric sparker just stops working. I am an average homeowner who uses the torch infrequently for plumbing, and almost weekly for starting the charcoal grill or wood stove. When the torch no longer sparks, it is just as good as any other, much cheaper, torch head. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 16, 2009

It's ok, but not what I expected

I'll start by saying that I am returning this item. The first job I used it on caused the plastic housing for the igniter button to melt. I was using it as directed, no differently than I have been using my previous torch for months without issue. As for the product itself, it's alright. Not what I was hoping for though. The hose is nice, it allows me to keep the tank upright (I'm using those small 14.1 oz tanks) so that I don't get flaring, and the belt clip is pretty handy too. However, the swirl flame, which is supposed to offer a hotter flame, wasn't exactly what I was hoping for. I'm not sure if mine was just broken, or if I was doing it totally wrong, but when I lit mine up I had to turn the gas on all the way for the flame to stabilize. That kind of defeats the purpose of having a variable nozzle. I noticed that if I didn't have the gas all the way open, my flame would sputter, like an old engine, and the flame would come out in rapid bursts. Once I turned the gas... 3/5 HaLo2FrEeEk - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) I would give 5 stars but the regulator gauge does not work to give a tank pressure. All my attempts to contact someone for a new gauge have failed. All I need is a new gauge at no cost. There should be better access for solving problems. Burns but leaves little control over flame

0 3/5 emptydown - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Mag-Torch MT200C Propane Pencil Flame Burner Torch (Tools & Home Improvement) (original five-star review) This torch worked exactly as I had hoped for. It was by far the best price I could find for any related items and am happy I made the purchase. It feels quite solid and I have no doubt that I'll have it around for years to come!Follow-up: After spending more time using this torch I've decided to lower the rating. It it very difficult to make fine adjustments to the flame. The knob is tight enough that it stays where you turn it to but making minor adjustments off of that position is fairly difficult. If you just need heat then this will produce it, but if you need more control over flame size/heat then this will present you with a challenge. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , June 18, 2012

    DANGEROUS!!

I noticed gas coming out of the torch after I had turned off the valve and the flame stopped. I found I had to turn the knob harder to get the gas to stop completely. After three such cycles, the valve knob started to spin freely and the gas was on full!! I had no choice but to unscrew the torch from the gas canister with a full blast of flame. Please note that I did NOT use tools of any kind. This all happened while operating the torch with my fingers ONLY. TAKE THIS OFF THE MARKET!!! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 10, 2014

Better than my old tip, but I wouldn't really call it a pencil flame

0 3/5 Ryan (Atlanta) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Mag-Torch MT200C Propane Pencil Flame Burner Torch (Tools & Home Improvement) I was looking for a really fine tip with a small flame. "Pencil flame" seems to fit that description, but really this just throws the same flame as the tip I already had. The adjustment are smooth and it is of high quality, but don't expect a flame that you can turn down to the size of an actual pencil tip. I ended up buying one of those smaller, refillable butane torches. I don't know if it's the nature of propane, but I can get a much smaller flame out of the butane torch. Sorry for giving 3 stars if "pencil flame" is standard lingo for this type of tip, but "precise point for detail work" seems a bit of an exaggeration to me. Maybe it's as small as you can make a propane flame, but there are other types of torches out there that produce a much finer flame than this. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 17, 2013

It does the job fast! Maybe a little too fast!

I bought mine as a kit including a bottle of MAPP from a local builder's supply here. But I thought I would comment. First the TS8000 is certainly high intensity! As others have posted one of the quarks of this thing are it's touchy flame control and lack of a true low mode. I was sweating 1/2" copper pipe and found that in the middle zone it was heating the pipe and flux so quickly (under 2 seconds!) that I was burning it off and leaving these very pretty scorch marks on my pipes. However after a little trial and error I discovered that you could back the flame off to just before it would blow out and be more of a "normal torch". At that lowest setting (assuming I didn't bump the knob with the back of my hand) it heated the fittings very evenly and slow enough to where I could sweat them and wipe them clean for a reasonable looking finish. I gave it four starts since it is a handheld blast furnace, but for larger pipes (most likely it's intended use) I assume it would work do... 4/5 DeusEx (OH) - See all my reviews This review is from: Bernzomatic TS8000 - High Intensity Trigger Start Torch (Automotive) I bought mine as a kit including a bottle of MAPP from a local builder's supply here. Excellent torch

Recently took on a diy project involving 1" copper so it was time to retire my 40 year old well used Bernzomatic propane torch (until I needed it to fix my new one, see below) and upgrade to the higher heat MAPP gas. Bottom line this is a first class torch and well worth the money given the features and quality. No more scratching a separate flint tool to light and the trigger on and off is much easier than turning a valve (which you can still do with this but no need). I was a little leary of my skills to handle the higher heat without burning up valve seats or copper pipe but no problem as this targeted flame allows for precise aiming and sweats the joints in half the time of propane. Remember this shorter window if you are just converting from propane. The project went very quickly with perfect joints so I am a MAPP believer. Also with this model's aluminum torch tip it is almost impossible to burn yourself if you accidentally touch it when first turned off as it incredibly cools... 5/5 Susan - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) My only neg: The tilt mechanism uses a plastic rachet and spring mechanism. In my expereience with similar designs, the plastic spring breaks if you repeatedly adjust the tilt. If it had... Difficult to ignite

I knocked two stars off this product due to the difficulty in getting it lit.I purchased this torch to singe the ends of paracord, for that purpose it works fairly well. My main complaint about this model is that it is extremely hard to start with one hand. You have to twist the starter knob and then push to ignite. I've used other torches which can be started with just your thumb (while gripping the body of the torch) and starting this one is just a pain. The good things about it are that it comes with some butane fuel already in it (ready to use out of the box), the textured grip is comfortable and the base allows it to be used on a table "hands-free".While I appreciate the security that the ignition mechanism provides (safety first, and all), in reality it just gets in the way of the use of the torch.I purchased the... 3/5 nobody "nobody" (everywhere) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) HOPE YOU READ THIS REVIEW FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can't say anymore about how great this little keychain light is than has already been said, but HERE'S the answer for making this light stay together for you, and NOT come undone on you. Cut yourself about a 4 inch long by about 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide strip of teflon tape. That's the non adhesive type of tape usually in a small plastic round container that plumbers wrap around pipe threads to prevent leaks(white in color). The tape once you cut it should wrap completely around the flashlights threads twice around. This will CURE the flashlight from coming undone on you. :-) Another trick I came up with is for all of you that have trouble loading this flashlight up with batteries. Next time, try this. When you are ready to change the batteries, carefully open the flashlight with the keychain clip facing down. Unscrew the cap (with the led in it), and set to the side. Now take the half with the keychain clip on it, with the old batteries still inside, and place it upside down on a... 5/5 Eric Barry - See all my reviews, February 2, 2010

Super bright flashlight at a very low cost -- replace with alkaline batteries ONLY!

I've needed a small flashlight for quite a while, as our backdoor is not well lit. I thought I would get a small single AAA flashlight, and found a very bright one for just under $50 (Fenix-made). However, after reading the reviews on this one, I decided I couldn't go wrong with trying the Nanolight. This light may only be a 10+ lumen, single-LED light, but it is brighter than a 9 LED light we bought at a hardware store (for $2) that requires 3 AA batteries. Amazingly, this is so small that it is barely half the length of my thumb and more thin than any point on my pinky finger. It has a nice clip that fastens it to your keychain in a snap.I bought one for myself and my wife, and we use it in place of any light in our car. With new LED technologies just around the corner, why pay more for other, expensive LED lights when you can get this for so little and choose to upgrade later if needed? We will be buying a lot of Nanolights for... 5/5 Aaron702 (Central Illinois, USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
