Carl Weller did it with his soldering gun. Back in the Thirties, Weller was a radio repairman. The soldering iron was to his trade what the handsaw was to the carpenter, the mill file to a machinist, the Stillson to a plumber.

This review is from: Apex Tool Group D550PK 120-volt 260/200-watt Professional Soldering Gun Kit (Tools & Home Improvement) I wanted a gun that would deliver the heat quickly. This gun has two ranges and the high range is what I was looking for. It delivers what it advertises. It holds the heat to the solders melting point. There was no overheating or burnt material. It also has two lamps by the trigger to illuminate the job in weak light. I am very satisfied with this soldering gun, it functions well and has a real nice balance when working. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 29, 2008

This review is from: Apex Tool Group D550PK 120-volt 260/200-watt Professional Soldering Gun Kit (Tools & Home Improvement) The Weller Soldering Gun is a solid value for the price. This is a smart purchase for the electronics hobbyist or home projects solderer but it's probably not up to standards for the professionals out there. The kit tips are well shaped and the gun heats up very quickly. Be aware that for those looking to start out, this product is not a substitute for a pen style soldering iron as it's a bit too big for easy handling on detailed projects like board work. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 5, 2010

    D650PK - The Best!

I've used soldering tools for over 50 years, since my first Weller gun in 1961, and I've tried them all. Some otherwise pretty good guns can't take being dropped (even once). A lot of tips just don't last. Some of the newer guns are awkward and uncomfortable to hold. Some of the soldering tips waste a most of their heat in the legs, instead of at the tip. I have a few old guns in need of tips, which are unavailable, or the substitute tips don't work right. But now - this gun is so good, I wish I'd bought one decades ago! It fits my hand perfectly. It's compact and well balanced. Materials and workmanship are first class - and even though I haven't dropped it yet, I can tell by the feel the housing is tough enough to take some knocks. Best of all - the tip gets hot FAST, and there is plenty of power for big jobs. After a day of soldering on #8AWG and #6AWG terminal lugs (40 or so), the tip still looks like new.Weller has been making this gun for a long time, and the tips are... 5/5 Roger C. This review is from: Weller D650PK Industrial Soldering Gun Kit (Tools & Home Improvement) Great soldering gun - built to last. After first few uses, tip required tightening to keep good electrical contact, and that is all. Have ~4 hours run time on it so far, works great. Heats very fast. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , August 1, 2011

0 5/5 Jbo - See all my reviews This review is from: Weller 8200PKS 120-volt 140/100-watt Universal Soldering Gun Kit (Tools & Home Improvement) Man o man. This is the real deal when it comes to soldering! I'm not talking about small jobs either, this baby gets HOT and QUICK. While the pen type soldering irons are great for smaller applications, this gun blows away the competition when it comes to heavy duty jobs. If you have a large amount of solder to apply to big wires, this is the gun for you.And with the name Weller on the box, you can be guaranteed a great product! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , March 6, 2014

    Good product, works well.

Totally pleasant experience! (almost) This solder gun is much nicer than I was expecting for the price. Heavy duty construction, functions exactly as described, heats up quickly, nice sturdy case, a bit of solder included.....all good things. Would have been 5 stars if not for the totally useless little light bulb that, apparently, is intended to light your work if you're soldering in the dark. I tried that. Even at night with no other lights it doesn't even light up the area at the end of the tip. What were they thinking? Be better if it wasn't even there. Woulda got 5 stars and maybe the gun would be even less expensive. Still.......It's a GOOD PRODUCT. WORKS WELL.Addendum (a month later). Have used the solder gun for a lot of little jobs, continues to please, still works well. The useless little light bulb stopped doing anything at all the second time I used the tool. Kinda disconcerting, re quality of the rest of the gun, but nothing else seems to be going... 4/5 tmexrea - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great iron if used carefully. Here are some tips (pun intended)

I've had this iron for ten years now. The level of use it's seen has varied up and down, depending on how much time I had available to spend on my electronics hobby. The iron itself is absolutely fine for, you guessed it, hobby and DIY use (no problems with it not being ESD safe, and I've soldered a lot of semiconductors). If I ever need to do a higher volume of work I will upgrade to a WES-51 temp controlled station, but for now this continues to fit the bill quite nicely. The tips are long-lived if you take care of them (keep it tinned even while sitting in the holder, try not to bash it on the holder when you put it in, don't leave it switched on if it won't be used for a while). The standard tip is too big for electronics use and must be replaced with something smaller. For a long time I had a medium-size tip on there and it seemed to function well between 3 and 4 on the heat control, depending on the size of the work. With this station you need to pay quite careful attention to... 5/5 Science Boy - See all my reviews This review is from: Weller WLC100 40-Watt Soldering Station (Tools & Home Improvement) I've had this iron for ten years now. For the same price one can get a "Professional" series Weller iron () with constant tip temperature, or a less known brand temperature-controlled station () that will be much nicer to work with.PROS:Weller quality and durability.CONS:Price is too high for a simple iron without temperature control, the "power control" knob works like a simple light dimmer - with no feedback from the tip, so the temperature will be jumping up and down while you work.-----------Side notes: for pleasant work experience and good quality soldering one needs to keep the proper tip temperature - it can't be too low or too high. THIS IS THE ONE TO GET!

0 5/5 FOX (USA) - See all my reviews Many years ago when I got this iron, it was only $30, and I see it has almost doubled in price, but STILL FAR BELOW the cost of the other Weller soldering iron stations! And there is really no other reason to get the other ones, when one of the elements goes bad on the other ones, you have to pay more than the price of this whole station just to replace the element! This one doesn't have any element, you just replace the tip, which you can get at any Radio Shack for a dollar or two tops. And I still have not needed to replace the tip on this one after years of use, since I keep the tip nice and tinned. This heats up nice and fast, is always reliable, just as good as any of the BLUE ones that cost three and four times the cost that the same company sells, and has never let me down.Get it now, before they raise the price any more!Once you get it, it should last a lifetime. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , February 18, 2005

    Great analog soldering iron.

A few years back I bought a digital soldering station from Rat Shack. It said it had replacable tips. You can replace them with as many tips as you want so long as you replace it with the only tip that fits that soldering iron which is huge. So I was working on a little tedious project and decided it was time to buy a new soldering iron that actually had a large selection of tips. After much deliberation I bought this one.The soldering wand is very ergonomic, light and easy to use. It has a soft narrow grip and a short tip making it easy to control when you are in tight spaces. It heats up in under a minute. The dial goes in 10 degree increments from 350 to 850 degrees Fahrenheit. The unit is very well built and has a sturdy stand with a funnel on the end to help guide the tip in so you aren't banging it against the coil when putting it in the stand. All in all I think it is a great soldering iron. I don't know what the reviewer who gave it one star was... 5/5 JAB (Texas) - See all my reviews A few years back I bought a digital soldering station from Rat Shack. It said it had replacable tips. High Quality and Easy to Use

I got the WES51 station for my first soldering experience, replacing bad/blown capacitors in my older G5 Imac, and it worked great. (25 capacitors replaced successfully!)I purchased based on positive reviews and the price seemed good. Never having soldered before- and frankly never having worked on the guts of my computer before- the project was daunting; I didn't want to spend a lot of dough on a tool that I may never use again and for a project that I perceived had dim prospects for success. Having used it successfully, I now consider this to be an excellent tool and a tremendous value for the price. When I first opened the box, I thought the unit looked antiquated- something you might unearth from underneath your grandfather's workbench. It has one LED to let you know the unit is on and heating, and a dial. The machine is solid, though, and has the look and feel of quality. The iron itself is light and the soft foam rubber makes it very... 5/5 M.
