Carl Weller did it with his soldering gun. Back in the Thirties, Weller was a radio repairman. The soldering iron was to his trade what the handsaw was to the carpenter, the mill file to a machinist, the Stillson to a plumber.

This review is from: Apex Tool Group D550PK 120-volt 260/200-watt Professional Soldering Gun Kit (Tools & Home Improvement) I wanted a gun that would deliver the heat quickly. This gun has two ranges and the high range is what I was looking for. It delivers what it advertises. It holds the heat to the solders melting point. There was no overheating or burnt material. It also has two lamps by the trigger to illuminate the job in weak light. I am very satisfied with this soldering gun, it functions well and has a real nice balance when working. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 29, 2008

This review is from: Apex Tool Group D550PK 120-volt 260/200-watt Professional Soldering Gun Kit (Tools & Home Improvement) The Weller Soldering Gun is a solid value for the price. This is a smart purchase for the electronics hobbyist or home projects solderer but it's probably not up to standards for the professionals out there. The kit tips are well shaped and the gun heats up very quickly. Be aware that for those looking to start out, this product is not a substitute for a pen style soldering iron as it's a bit too big for easy handling on detailed projects like board work. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 5, 2010

    Good product, works well.

Totally pleasant experience! (almost) This solder gun is much nicer than I was expecting for the price. Heavy duty construction, functions exactly as described, heats up quickly, nice sturdy case, a bit of solder included.....all good things. Would have been 5 stars if not for the totally useless little light bulb that, apparently, is intended to light your work if you're soldering in the dark. I tried that. Even at night with no other lights it doesn't even light up the area at the end of the tip. What were they thinking? Be better if it wasn't even there. Woulda got 5 stars and maybe the gun would be even less expensive. Still.......It's a GOOD PRODUCT. WORKS WELL.Addendum (a month later). Have used the solder gun for a lot of little jobs, continues to please, still works well. The useless little light bulb stopped doing anything at all the second time I used the tool. Kinda disconcerting, re quality of the rest of the gun, but nothing else seems to be going... 4/5 tmexrea - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This is the real deal when it comes to soldering! I'm not talking about small jobs either, this baby gets HOT and QUICK. While the pen type soldering irons are great for smaller applications, this gun blows away the competition when it comes to heavy duty jobs. If you have a large amount of solder to apply to big wires, this is the gun for you.And with the name Weller on the box, you can be guaranteed a great product! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , March 6, 2014

0 4/5 WINGNUT (MICHIGAN) - See all my reviews This review is from: Weller D650 Industrial Soldering Gun (Tools & Home Improvement) A good product. I bought this one to replace the old one I had owned for about 8 years. It finally quit working after being dropped a couple of times. It heats quickly and will readily solder up to 8ga wire. I have also used the cutting tip to weld plastic and cut nylon cord. It is important to keep the tip clamp screws tight. If it doesn't heat up properly (less than 10 sec) then the clamp screws probably need tightening. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 16, 2008

Is this the best there is? Time for a redesign...

Ive owned several of these, since they are suppose to be "the best" on the market. The first one I received, one of the screws holding the tip on were in crooked and stripped out so it never tightened on right. In my opinion this tool is sub par. With my current tool, it does heat quickly, but for some reason every 10 minutes of use I have to re-tighten the screws due to loosening, or perhaps carbon buildup. This is quite inconvenient and after you unscrew it a dozen times the alloy body strips out and needs to be re-tapped with larger threads.I like my new 'home tapped' threads better anyways because with the larger screws, it hold tighter, and loosens up less often. The high setting is also a pain to use since you have to hold the trigger in half way to activate it. This is uncomfortable and cramps my fingers very quickly. Its also counter-intuitive having the high setting at half pressed in and low at fully pressed.I'm not all squawk... 3/5 Ewan C - See all my reviews This review is from: Weller 8200 Universal Soldering Gun (Tools & Home Improvement) Ive owned several of these, since they are suppose to be "the best" on the market. Great iron if used carefully. Here are some tips (pun intended)

I've had this iron for ten years now. The level of use it's seen has varied up and down, depending on how much time I had available to spend on my electronics hobby. The iron itself is absolutely fine for, you guessed it, hobby and DIY use (no problems with it not being ESD safe, and I've soldered a lot of semiconductors). If I ever need to do a higher volume of work I will upgrade to a WES-51 temp controlled station, but for now this continues to fit the bill quite nicely. The tips are long-lived if you take care of them (keep it tinned even while sitting in the holder, try not to bash it on the holder when you put it in, don't leave it switched on if it won't be used for a while). The standard tip is too big for electronics use and must be replaced with something smaller. For a long time I had a medium-size tip on there and it seemed to function well between 3 and 4 on the heat control, depending on the size of the work. With this station you need to pay quite careful attention to... 5/5 Science Boy - See all my reviews This review is from: Weller WLC100 40-Watt Soldering Station (Tools & Home Improvement) I've had this iron for ten years now. This review is from: Weller SP40NKUS 40 Watt LED Soldering Iron Kit, Red/Black (Tools & Home Improvement) Initially I really liked this iron. Only owned for 2 months doing some light work and now won't heat. This seems to be a common problem with these. Cheap and disposable. Has a nice feature with LEDs to see what you're doing. The irony of the iron is that the LEDs last years...sadness. Now it's a corded low lumen flashlight with a 6 ft reach possessing blunt stabbing abilities. Oh joy. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , June 27, 2014

DO NOT USE WITH LEAD FREE SOLDER !! TIPS FALL APART VERY QUICKLY !!

The iron itself is nice and the lights are great. I bought a large quantity of these irons to use for STEM education at a local school. In Maryland, we have to use lead free solder in schools. The tips for this iron only have nickel over copper plating which erodes extremely quickly (after about 20-30 minutes of use) when used with lead free solder. The whole front of the soldering iron tip just vanishes !!!!Good soldering iron tips have copper, nickel, then iron, and chrome plating on them to do a better job of protecting the copper underneath. For reference, I was using Kester K100 solder with #48 flux. I have been using this same solder with my Hakko professional iron with great results for a long time with no problems at all. This has been a disaster and I have had to scramble to go beg and borrow some real soldering irons for my next classes. Loved It

I have the previous model of the weller 40w soldering iron and this is a definite improvement. At first I was a little concerned about the bulky front of the soldering iron but after using it those concerns are gone. In fact, the new Weller soldering iron seems better in every way. But let me take you through it one-by-one:The HandleThe hard plastics have a matt finish that feels nice and does offer a little friction and there is a rubber grip that makes holding it very easy. The rubber grip extends over the lip of the chunky triangular front of the handle. The triangular shape with the high friction grip of the rubber means the iron is safer. The previous one would roll easily just from the weight of the cable. The new design means it stays put where you leave it.Another improvement to the handle is the flexible cable protextor at the base of the handle which will help stop the cable from bending and wearing out the insulation.The... 5/5 Inna Tysoe "Inna Tysoe" (Earth) - See all my reviews, May 3, 2013
