Carl Weller did it with his soldering gun. Back in the Thirties, Weller was a radio repairman. The soldering iron was to his trade what the handsaw was to the carpenter, the mill file to a machinist, the Stillson to a plumber.

This review is from: Apex Tool Group D550PK 120-volt 260/200-watt Professional Soldering Gun Kit (Tools & Home Improvement) I wanted a gun that would deliver the heat quickly. This gun has two ranges and the high range is what I was looking for. It delivers what it advertises. It holds the heat to the solders melting point. There was no overheating or burnt material. It also has two lamps by the trigger to illuminate the job in weak light. I am very satisfied with this soldering gun, it functions well and has a real nice balance when working. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 29, 2008

This review is from: Apex Tool Group D550PK 120-volt 260/200-watt Professional Soldering Gun Kit (Tools & Home Improvement) The Weller Soldering Gun is a solid value for the price. This is a smart purchase for the electronics hobbyist or home projects solderer but it's probably not up to standards for the professionals out there. The kit tips are well shaped and the gun heats up very quickly. Be aware that for those looking to start out, this product is not a substitute for a pen style soldering iron as it's a bit too big for easy handling on detailed projects like board work. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 5, 2010

0 4/5 WINGNUT (MICHIGAN) - See all my reviews This review is from: Weller D650 Industrial Soldering Gun (Tools & Home Improvement) A good product. I bought this one to replace the old one I had owned for about 8 years. It finally quit working after being dropped a couple of times. It heats quickly and will readily solder up to 8ga wire. I have also used the cutting tip to weld plastic and cut nylon cord. It is important to keep the tip clamp screws tight. If it doesn't heat up properly (less than 10 sec) then the clamp screws probably need tightening. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 16, 2008

Great iron if used carefully. Here are some tips (pun intended)

I've had this iron for ten years now. The level of use it's seen has varied up and down, depending on how much time I had available to spend on my electronics hobby. The iron itself is absolutely fine for, you guessed it, hobby and DIY use (no problems with it not being ESD safe, and I've soldered a lot of semiconductors). If I ever need to do a higher volume of work I will upgrade to a WES-51 temp controlled station, but for now this continues to fit the bill quite nicely. The tips are long-lived if you take care of them (keep it tinned even while sitting in the holder, try not to bash it on the holder when you put it in, don't leave it switched on if it won't be used for a while). The standard tip is too big for electronics use and must be replaced with something smaller. For a long time I had a medium-size tip on there and it seemed to function well between 3 and 4 on the heat control, depending on the size of the work. With this station you need to pay quite careful attention to... 5/5 Science Boy - See all my reviews This review is from: Weller WLC100 40-Watt Soldering Station (Tools & Home Improvement) I've had this iron for ten years now. Great analog soldering iron.

A few years back I bought a digital soldering station from Rat Shack. It said it had replacable tips. You can replace them with as many tips as you want so long as you replace it with the only tip that fits that soldering iron which is huge. So I was working on a little tedious project and decided it was time to buy a new soldering iron that actually had a large selection of tips. After much deliberation I bought this one.The soldering wand is very ergonomic, light and easy to use. It has a soft narrow grip and a short tip making it easy to control when you are in tight spaces. It heats up in under a minute. The dial goes in 10 degree increments from 350 to 850 degrees Fahrenheit. The unit is very well built and has a sturdy stand with a funnel on the end to help guide the tip in so you aren't banging it against the coil when putting it in the stand. All in all I think it is a great soldering iron. I don't know what the reviewer who gave it one star was... 5/5 JAB (Texas) - See all my reviews A few years back I bought a digital soldering station from Rat Shack. It said it had replacable tips. High Quality and Easy to Use

I got the WES51 station for my first soldering experience, replacing bad/blown capacitors in my older G5 Imac, and it worked great. (25 capacitors replaced successfully!)I purchased based on positive reviews and the price seemed good. Never having soldered before- and frankly never having worked on the guts of my computer before- the project was daunting; I didn't want to spend a lot of dough on a tool that I may never use again and for a project that I perceived had dim prospects for success. Having used it successfully, I now consider this to be an excellent tool and a tremendous value for the price. When I first opened the box, I thought the unit looked antiquated- something you might unearth from underneath your grandfather's workbench. It has one LED to let you know the unit is on and heating, and a dial. The machine is solid, though, and has the look and feel of quality. The iron itself is light and the soft foam rubber makes it very... 5/5 M. 0 5/5 Fletch "Fletch" (Bugtussle, Timbuktu) - See all my reviews This review is from: Weller WES51 Analog Soldering Station (Tools & Home Improvement) The Weller WES51 is without a doubt the absolute best soldering iron that a working man can justify spending the money on. It's the ONLY heavy duty iron you'll ever find that allows exact temp settings for under a hundred bucks. It allows you to set the temp only a few degrees above the melting point of the solder, greatly enhancing the quality of your work. And it's a heavy duty unit, so unlike the cheap lightweight ripoffs. The rugged and user friendly design reminds me of something made in the 1950s or 1960s. Well done, Weller! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 14, 2008
