Carl Weller did it with his soldering gun. Back in the Thirties, Weller was a radio repairman. The soldering iron was to his trade what the handsaw was to the carpenter, the mill file to a machinist, the Stillson to a plumber.

This review is from: Apex Tool Group D550PK 120-volt 260/200-watt Professional Soldering Gun Kit (Tools & Home Improvement) I wanted a gun that would deliver the heat quickly. This gun has two ranges and the high range is what I was looking for. It delivers what it advertises. It holds the heat to the solders melting point. There was no overheating or burnt material. It also has two lamps by the trigger to illuminate the job in weak light. I am very satisfied with this soldering gun, it functions well and has a real nice balance when working. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 29, 2008

This review is from: Apex Tool Group D550PK 120-volt 260/200-watt Professional Soldering Gun Kit (Tools & Home Improvement) The Weller Soldering Gun is a solid value for the price. This is a smart purchase for the electronics hobbyist or home projects solderer but it's probably not up to standards for the professionals out there. The kit tips are well shaped and the gun heats up very quickly. Be aware that for those looking to start out, this product is not a substitute for a pen style soldering iron as it's a bit too big for easy handling on detailed projects like board work. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 5, 2010

    D650PK - The Best!

I've used soldering tools for over 50 years, since my first Weller gun in 1961, and I've tried them all. Some otherwise pretty good guns can't take being dropped (even once). A lot of tips just don't last. Some of the newer guns are awkward and uncomfortable to hold. Some of the soldering tips waste a most of their heat in the legs, instead of at the tip. I have a few old guns in need of tips, which are unavailable, or the substitute tips don't work right. But now - this gun is so good, I wish I'd bought one decades ago! It fits my hand perfectly. It's compact and well balanced. Materials and workmanship are first class - and even though I haven't dropped it yet, I can tell by the feel the housing is tough enough to take some knocks. Best of all - the tip gets hot FAST, and there is plenty of power for big jobs. After a day of soldering on #8AWG and #6AWG terminal lugs (40 or so), the tip still looks like new.Weller has been making this gun for a long time, and the tips are... 5/5 Roger C. When you have to put together BIG wires, use this!

0 5/5 Atlanta Network Guy (Atlanta, GA United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Weller WEL8200PK 120-Volt 140/100 Watts Universal Soldering Gun Kit (Tools & Home Improvement) Soldering irons are great for electronics component and circuit board assembly, but when the occasion comes when solder has to be applied to big wiring (or removed from it), the volume of metal sucks away the heat faster than an ordinary iron can apply it. On those occasions, only a solder gun or a gas torch applys enough joules of energy for the job, and a solder gun does a much neater job without endangering nearby possesions. Weller is the industry leader for these devices. Changing tips is a bit of a hassel, and somebody at Weller needs to revisit that engineering, but its overall a very nice tool for what it does. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , February 6, 2002

    Loved It

I have the previous model of the weller 40w soldering iron and this is a definite improvement. At first I was a little concerned about the bulky front of the soldering iron but after using it those concerns are gone. In fact, the new Weller soldering iron seems better in every way. But let me take you through it one-by-one:The HandleThe hard plastics have a matt finish that feels nice and does offer a little friction and there is a rubber grip that makes holding it very easy. The rubber grip extends over the lip of the chunky triangular front of the handle. The triangular shape with the high friction grip of the rubber means the iron is safer. The previous one would roll easily just from the weight of the cable. The new design means it stays put where you leave it.Another improvement to the handle is the flexible cable protextor at the base of the handle which will help stop the cable from bending and wearing out the insulation.The... 5/5 Inna Tysoe "Inna Tysoe" (Earth) - See all my reviews, May 3, 2013

Weller is a great soldering iron!

I have a Weller soldering gun that I bought in the 1960's and it is still working like new! Weller makes quality stuff. This iron is no exception. It has a great feel, not too heavy, and very comfortable and secure. The triangular grip not only gives a secure feel, but prevents the iron from rolling if you put it down(but you should rest it on a holder, such as the one supplied, not on a flat surface). It comes with three tips: wedge, fine point, and rounded point. It also comes with instructions for soldering(very good advice!), an iron rest, some small amount of lead-free solder, and a soldering tool. The soldering tool is made of plastic and is pointy on one end and forked on the other. It can be used for manipulating hot parts as well as pulling apart wires during desoldering. It can also be used to hold small strips of solder. Weller irons are among the best available. This forty watt is perfect for medium work, especially electronics. If you need more heat, you can select higher... 5/5 J. M WILINSKY (teaneck, NJ United States) - See all my reviews, April 24, 2013

This review is from: Weller SP40NKUS Medium Duty LED Soldering Iron Kit, Red/Black (Tools & Home Improvement) This is a fantastic iron as I do a lot of soldering since I fly RC Planes. It gets plenty hot enough to solder anything I need.. However, I now wish that I would have purchased one with a temp control for doing tiny circuits. This will do it but you need to be careful not to over heat your project or use one of the pointed tips. I probably will buy a Weller solder station to control the heat for my needs, but for most normal projects, this is a perfect tool! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 14, 2013

    Great analog soldering iron.

A few years back I bought a digital soldering station from Rat Shack. It said it had replacable tips. You can replace them with as many tips as you want so long as you replace it with the only tip that fits that soldering iron which is huge. So I was working on a little tedious project and decided it was time to buy a new soldering iron that actually had a large selection of tips. After much deliberation I bought this one.The soldering wand is very ergonomic, light and easy to use. It has a soft narrow grip and a short tip making it easy to control when you are in tight spaces. It heats up in under a minute. The dial goes in 10 degree increments from 350 to 850 degrees Fahrenheit. The unit is very well built and has a sturdy stand with a funnel on the end to help guide the tip in so you aren't banging it against the coil when putting it in the stand. All in all I think it is a great soldering iron. I don't know what the reviewer who gave it one star was... 5/5 JAB (Texas) - See all my reviews A few years back I bought a digital soldering station from Rat Shack. It said it had replacable tips. High Quality and Easy to Use

I got the WES51 station for my first soldering experience, replacing bad/blown capacitors in my older G5 Imac, and it worked great. (25 capacitors replaced successfully!)I purchased based on positive reviews and the price seemed good. Never having soldered before- and frankly never having worked on the guts of my computer before- the project was daunting; I didn't want to spend a lot of dough on a tool that I may never use again and for a project that I perceived had dim prospects for success. Having used it successfully, I now consider this to be an excellent tool and a tremendous value for the price. When I first opened the box, I thought the unit looked antiquated- something you might unearth from underneath your grandfather's workbench. It has one LED to let you know the unit is on and heating, and a dial. The machine is solid, though, and has the look and feel of quality. The iron itself is light and the soft foam rubber makes it very... 5/5 M. Great iron if used carefully. Here are some tips (pun intended)

I've had this iron for ten years now. The level of use it's seen has varied up and down, depending on how much time I had available to spend on my electronics hobby. The iron itself is absolutely fine for, you guessed it, hobby and DIY use (no problems with it not being ESD safe, and I've soldered a lot of semiconductors). If I ever need to do a higher volume of work I will upgrade to a WES-51 temp controlled station, but for now this continues to fit the bill quite nicely. The tips are long-lived if you take care of them (keep it tinned even while sitting in the holder, try not to bash it on the holder when you put it in, don't leave it switched on if it won't be used for a while). The standard tip is too big for electronics use and must be replaced with something smaller. For a long time I had a medium-size tip on there and it seemed to function well between 3 and 4 on the heat control, depending on the size of the work. With this station you need to pay quite careful attention to... 5/5 Science Boy - See all my reviews This review is from: Weller WLC100 40-Watt Soldering Station (Tools & Home Improvement) I've had this iron for ten years now. THIS IS THE ONE TO GET!

0 5/5 FOX (USA) - See all my reviews Many years ago when I got this iron, it was only $30, and I see it has almost doubled in price, but STILL FAR BELOW the cost of the other Weller soldering iron stations! And there is really no other reason to get the other ones, when one of the elements goes bad on the other ones, you have to pay more than the price of this whole station just to replace the element! This one doesn't have any element, you just replace the tip, which you can get at any Radio Shack for a dollar or two tops. And I still have not needed to replace the tip on this one after years of use, since I keep the tip nice and tinned. This heats up nice and fast, is always reliable, just as good as any of the BLUE ones that cost three and four times the cost that the same company sells, and has never let me down.Get it now, before they raise the price any more!Once you get it, it should last a lifetime. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , February 18, 2005

I bought this one to replace the old one I had owned for about 8 years. It finally quit working after being dropped a couple of times. It heats quickly and will readily solder up to 8ga wire. I have also used the cutting tip to weld plastic and cut nylon cord. It is important to keep the tip clamp screws tight. If it doesn't heat up properly (less than 10 sec) then the clamp screws probably need tightening. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 16, 2008
