Doing electrical every day, LOOK ELSEWHERE or prepare to buy a case full of tips. They crack after 20 cycles average.

Okay, I don't leave many bad reviews, but once in a while a product I use all the time just really disappoints me. I deal with electrical all the time. The problem with this iron, which is an engineering problem with fast-heat irons and soft metals, in order to heat the element quickly the element must be a very low-density metal. This way, it heats up quickly, in under 20 seconds. However, the problem with this is that every time one heats and cools a metal it stresses the structure leading to cracking. Long story short after maybe 15-20 heat and cool cycles the element develops a crack and becomes completely useless I've been through maybe six elements. So, I thought if I just bought like four elements, that would be enough for a couple months. Not even close, after less than 20 heat and cool cycles (think 20 wires soldered, the element cracks and is garbage.) I use another one that is higher wattage and a different brand, that one lasted a lot longer, think months but even it... 2/5 A. MCCLAIN (Somewhere, MN) - See all my reviews, July 20, 2015

    Good product, works well.

Totally pleasant experience! (almost) This solder gun is much nicer than I was expecting for the price. Heavy duty construction, functions exactly as described, heats up quickly, nice sturdy case, a bit of solder included.....all good things. Would have been 5 stars if not for the totally useless little light bulb that, apparently, is intended to light your work if you're soldering in the dark. I tried that. Even at night with no other lights it doesn't even light up the area at the end of the tip. What were they thinking? Be better if it wasn't even there. Woulda got 5 stars and maybe the gun would be even less expensive. Still.......It's a GOOD PRODUCT. WORKS WELL.Addendum (a month later). Have used the solder gun for a lot of little jobs, continues to please, still works well. The useless little light bulb stopped doing anything at all the second time I used the tool. Kinda disconcerting, re quality of the rest of the gun, but nothing else seems to be going... 4/5 tmexrea - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Apex Tool Group D550PK 120-volt 260/200-watt Professional Soldering Gun Kit (Tools & Home Improvement) I wanted a gun that would deliver the heat quickly. This gun has two ranges and the high range is what I was looking for. It delivers what it advertises. It holds the heat to the solders melting point. There was no overheating or burnt material. It also has two lamps by the trigger to illuminate the job in weak light. I am very satisfied with this soldering gun, it functions well and has a real nice balance when working. As good as it was 40 years ago & still going

5/5 Timothy J. Ryan (Athens, OH United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Apex Tool Group D550PK 120-volt 260/200-watt Professional Soldering Gun Kit (Tools & Home Improvement) This soldering gun is a classic, and constitutes an example of a great tool that has NOT been replaced with a cheaper-to-produce but inferior product. The modern guns are as good as those I used when I was a boy 40 years ago. I recently purchased this one to (finally) replace a lower wattage pencil soldering iron I've been putting up with for years after my first Weller gun broke. This gun has all the heat I need and then some. There is nothing more frustrating than sitting and sitting while waiting for some twisted wires to finally get hot enough to melt the solder. With the 550 that wait time is only about 10-15 seconds for your typical 12 or 14 gauge stranded wire (such as you find in larger circuits in cars). It helps to use the thinner 1.0 mm gauge rosin core solder of course. Now that I have this gun I feel like I'm set for another 20 years of use. Good soldering gun starter for the money

4/5 PDXLach - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Apex Tool Group D550PK 120-volt 260/200-watt Professional Soldering Gun Kit (Tools & Home Improvement) The Weller Soldering Gun is a solid value for the price. This is a smart purchase for the electronics hobbyist or home projects solderer but it's probably not up to standards for the professionals out there. The kit tips are well shaped and the gun heats up very quickly. Be aware that for those looking to start out, this product is not a substitute for a pen style soldering iron as it's a bit too big for easy handling on detailed projects like board work. D650PK - The Best!

I've used soldering tools for over 50 years, since my first Weller gun in 1961, and I've tried them all. Some otherwise pretty good guns can't take being dropped (even once). A lot of tips just don't last. Some of the newer guns are awkward and uncomfortable to hold. Some of the soldering tips waste a most of their heat in the legs, instead of at the tip. I have a few old guns in need of tips, which are unavailable, or the substitute tips don't work right. But now - this gun is so good, I wish I'd bought one decades ago! It fits my hand perfectly. It's compact and well balanced. Materials and workmanship are first class - and even though I haven't dropped it yet, I can tell by the feel the housing is tough enough to take some knocks. Best of all - the tip gets hot FAST, and there is plenty of power for big jobs. After a day of soldering on #8AWG and #6AWG terminal lugs (40 or so), the tip still looks like new.Weller has been making this gun for a long time, and the tips are... 5/5 Roger C. Great iron if used carefully. Here are some tips (pun intended)

I've had this iron for ten years now. The level of use it's seen has varied up and down, depending on how much time I had available to spend on my electronics hobby. The iron itself is absolutely fine for, you guessed it, hobby and DIY use (no problems with it not being ESD safe, and I've soldered a lot of semiconductors). If I ever need to do a higher volume of work I will upgrade to a WES-51 temp controlled station, but for now this continues to fit the bill quite nicely. The tips are long-lived if you take care of them (keep it tinned even while sitting in the holder, try not to bash it on the holder when you put it in, don't leave it switched on if it won't be used for a while). The standard tip is too big for electronics use and must be replaced with something smaller. For a long time I had a medium-size tip on there and it seemed to function well between 3 and 4 on the heat control, depending on the size of the work. With this station you need to pay quite careful attention to... 5/5 Science Boy - See all my reviews This review is from: Weller WLC100 40-Watt Soldering Station (Tools & Home Improvement) I've had this iron for ten years now. 4/5 WINGNUT (MICHIGAN) - See all my reviews This review is from: Weller D650 Industrial Soldering Gun (Tools & Home Improvement) A good product. I bought this one to replace the old one I had owned for about 8 years. It finally quit working after being dropped a couple of times. It heats quickly and will readily solder up to 8ga wire. I have also used the cutting tip to weld plastic and cut nylon cord. It is important to keep the tip clamp screws tight. If it doesn't heat up properly (less than 10 sec) then the clamp screws probably need tightening.
