Carl Weller did it with his soldering gun. Back in the Thirties, Weller was a radio repairman. The soldering iron was to his trade what the handsaw was to the carpenter, the mill file to a machinist, the Stillson to a plumber.

This review is from: Apex Tool Group D550PK 120-volt 260/200-watt Professional Soldering Gun Kit (Tools & Home Improvement) I wanted a gun that would deliver the heat quickly. This gun has two ranges and the high range is what I was looking for. It delivers what it advertises. It holds the heat to the solders melting point. There was no overheating or burnt material. It also has two lamps by the trigger to illuminate the job in weak light. I am very satisfied with this soldering gun, it functions well and has a real nice balance when working. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 29, 2008

This is a smart purchase for the electronics hobbyist or home projects solderer but it's probably not up to standards for the professionals out there. The kit tips are well shaped and the gun heats up very quickly. Be aware that for those looking to start out, this product is not a substitute for a pen style soldering iron as it's a bit too big for easy handling on detailed projects like board work. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 5, 2010

0 4/5 WINGNUT (MICHIGAN) - See all my reviews This review is from: Weller D650 Industrial Soldering Gun (Tools & Home Improvement) A good product. I bought this one to replace the old one I had owned for about 8 years. It finally quit working after being dropped a couple of times. It heats quickly and will readily solder up to 8ga wire. I have also used the cutting tip to weld plastic and cut nylon cord. It is important to keep the tip clamp screws tight. If it doesn't heat up properly (less than 10 sec) then the clamp screws probably need tightening. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 16, 2008

First thing I noticed was that the light does not work. Second, the internal transformer seems to be loose because I can feel it flopping around if I shake the gun. It DOES solder adequately though. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 25, 2010

    D650PK - The Best!

I've used soldering tools for over 50 years, since my first Weller gun in 1961, and I've tried them all. Some otherwise pretty good guns can't take being dropped (even once). A lot of tips just don't last. Some of the newer guns are awkward and uncomfortable to hold. Some of the soldering tips waste a most of their heat in the legs, instead of at the tip. I have a few old guns in need of tips, which are unavailable, or the substitute tips don't work right. But now - this gun is so good, I wish I'd bought one decades ago! It fits my hand perfectly. It's compact and well balanced. Materials and workmanship are first class - and even though I haven't dropped it yet, I can tell by the feel the housing is tough enough to take some knocks. Best of all - the tip gets hot FAST, and there is plenty of power for big jobs. After a day of soldering on #8AWG and #6AWG terminal lugs (40 or so), the tip still looks like new.Weller has been making this gun for a long time, and the tips are... 5/5 Roger C. After first few uses, tip required tightening to keep good electrical contact, and that is all. Have ~4 hours run time on it so far, works great. Great iron if used carefully. Here are some tips (pun intended)

I've had this iron for ten years now. The level of use it's seen has varied up and down, depending on how much time I had available to spend on my electronics hobby. The iron itself is absolutely fine for, you guessed it, hobby and DIY use (no problems with it not being ESD safe, and I've soldered a lot of semiconductors). If I ever need to do a higher volume of work I will upgrade to a WES-51 temp controlled station, but for now this continues to fit the bill quite nicely. The tips are long-lived if you take care of them (keep it tinned even while sitting in the holder, try not to bash it on the holder when you put it in, don't leave it switched on if it won't be used for a while). The standard tip is too big for electronics use and must be replaced with something smaller. For a long time I had a medium-size tip on there and it seemed to function well between 3 and 4 on the heat control, depending on the size of the work. With this station you need to pay quite careful attention to... 5/5 Science Boy - See all my reviews This review is from: Weller WLC100 40-Watt Soldering Station (Tools & Home Improvement) I've had this iron for ten years now. THIS IS THE ONE TO GET!

0 5/5 FOX (USA) - See all my reviews Many years ago when I got this iron, it was only $30, and I see it has almost doubled in price, but STILL FAR BELOW the cost of the other Weller soldering iron stations! And there is really no other reason to get the other ones, when one of the elements goes bad on the other ones, you have to pay more than the price of this whole station just to replace the element! This one doesn't have any element, you just replace the tip, which you can get at any Radio Shack for a dollar or two tops. And I still have not needed to replace the tip on this one after years of use, since I keep the tip nice and tinned. This heats up nice and fast, is always reliable, just as good as any of the BLUE ones that cost three and four times the cost that the same company sells, and has never let me down.Get it now, before they raise the price any more!Once you get it, it should last a lifetime. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , February 18, 2005

This review is from: Apex Tool Group 7135W Replacement Soldering Gun Tip (Tools & Home Improvement) I got my American made Weller USED back in 1987. I have no idea how old it actually is. Twenty-five years later and I am on my third tip. The tip was getting pretty beat up from the toolbox so I ordered these replacements and they fit perfectly. Sadly I see the tips are now made in Mexico. I see no quality issues and I am not surprised I guess I was just wistfully hoping they were still American made.. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , February 2, 2012
